WPCO Approve Donations To Programs

From skateboard clinics to history conference trips, members of the Wolf Point Community Organization approved donations during its monthly meeting on Monday, May 18.

WPCO approved $3,000 for a skateboard clinic scheduled in Wolf Point on June 21. The amount will cover 20 skateboards and 20 helmets. In addition, a board from Missoula is giving $800 for 10 skateboards and 10 helmets. WPCO chairman Jason Hamilton was pleased about having the event in Wolf Point. “It’s not just basketball. It’s a different sport,” Hamilton said.

Members approved a donation of $500 to help area resident Vicki Bisbee attend a conference in Phoenix, Ariz., concerning Parkinson’s disease. Bisbee said it’s the first time that the international conference is being held in the United States in 10 years.

A donation of $4,000 was approved to assist seven students from Frontier School attend the National History Day national competition in Maryland during June. Students will present their projects at a future WPCO meeting.

WPCO also approved $500 for Wolf Point student Evelyn Turcotte to attend the National History Day national competition.

A $1,250 donation for a pre-kindergarten graduation was approved to purchase decorations, awards and other graduation expenses. The event is scheduled for May 28 at 1 p.m.

WPCO approved $4,000 each for the Yellowjacket baseball program and Yellowjacket softball program.

In addition, academic graduation incentives gift cards were approved for Head Start, eighth grade and high school senior graduates.

Wayne TwoBulls reported that planning for WPCO’s pow-wow is going well. A community day featuring a free feed at 5 p.m. is scheduled for June 4. The powwow will then take place on June 5-7.

“We’re pretty much ready to go,” TwoBulls said.

Taylor Hamilton was voted the organization’s new secretary/ treasurer. She received 15 votes compared to Kayla Hentges’ 10 votes.

During the Tribal Executive Board report, TEB member Roxanne Gourneau expressed concern about possible decreases in energy assistance funding.

Gourneau also said that she feels the audit of the housing authority should be made public.
