The Culbertson Town Council held its regular meeting on Monday, April 13. JR Ewing, Magnus Services LLC, spoke to the council about leasing two freshwater storage pits for local fracking operations. The council decided to table Ewing’s offer of $25,000 for a six month to one year provisional lease.

With approximately 100 well sites expected to become operational locally in the next year, Mayor Todd Gabriel described the recent uptick in needs from area oil and gas companies as, “only the beginning.”

Candidate for Roosevelt County sheriff Jason Baker addressed the council, discussing his run for office, which he said will include knocking on doors and attending local events. He is currently running against Wes Headdress.

The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office report was discussed. There were 53 calls for service, 18 citations and three arrests reported for the month.

A first reading of the new ordinance governing mandatory water connections, including language prohibiting the drilling off wells, was approved.

The date for the upcoming town clean-up day was set for June 6.

The next meeting is set for May 11 at 6:30 p.m.
