Man Found Dead In Tribal Jail

The Fort Peck Tribes Department of Law and Justice reports that on Friday, March 13, at approximately 4:47 p.m., a police officer responded to a railroad crossing west of Wolf Point. The nature of the call was that a male was walking on the railroad tracks.

The 36-year-old Fort Peck tribal member was located walking on the tracks. An officer determined that the male, who said he was walking home, was intoxicated.

The male was arrested, medically cleared and was incarcerated at the Fort Peck Adult Correctional Facility.

At approximately 9:19 p.m. while conducting mandatory cell checks, a correctional officer found the male unresponsive due to a self inflicted hanging. After the correctional officer notified the 911 Dispatch Center, Fort Peck tribal police officers were dispatched. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started and continued until medical professionals pronounced the male deceased. The male was the only inmate in the cell.

The case is still under investigation by the Fort Peck Tribes Department of Law and Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office. A cause of death will not be determined until all of the facts have been gathered.
