Area Feels Strong Winds, Blizzard Conditions
A very strong wind storm created blizzard conditions in the area and some spots lost electrical power on Wednesday night, Dec. 17.
Lindsey McNabb, Roosevelt County’s disaster and emergency services coordinator, said that she sent out advisories to urge people to stay home during the night.
“My phone was going off the hook all evening,” McNabb said.
She also stayed in contact with other DES coordinators in the region.
Power outages were reported in Frazer and some spots of Wolf Point. A wind gust of 97 mph was reported at Fort Peck Lake.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the airport in Glasgow had wind gusts up to 78 miles per hour. Other reported wind gusts were 68 mph in Lustre and 65 mph in Frazer.
Wind gusts in Roosevelt County included 72 mph in Wolf Point and 68 in Poplar.
Other reported wind gusts in northeastern Montana included 74 mph near Vida, 64 mph in Scobey, 61 mph in Homestead, 76 mph in Savage, 75 mph in Lambert and 71 mph in Sidney, The Phillips and Valley County DES issued an emergency travel only order at about 9:30 p.m. Closed highways included Highway 2 from Malta to Wolf Point and Highway 13 from Wolf Point to Circle.
Throughout the state of Montana, it was reported that Northwestern Energy was working to restore service to more than 35,000 customers who experienced a power outage.
