Wolf Point High School senior Phelanee Brown is now one of the captains for the school’s cheer squad, but her becoming a cheerleader was a bit of a tale of destiny.

At the start of her freshman year, Brown had the intention of being part of the school’s volleyball program. But she missed the first practice of the season.

“I ended up going for cheer instead,” Brown said. “I actually ended up like stunting.”

Although she has thought of playing volleyball since that time, she loves her time with her teammates. Brown is the only senior on this year’s seven-member squad.

“They feel like they are my little sisters,” Brown said.

A highlight for her was hitting a “pretty girl pose” during a game last season. “They throw you up in the air and hit a pose in the air,” she explained. She is looking forward to doing similar routines at basketball games this upcoming season.

Brown has also enjoyed attending cheer camps. She was excited when Wolf Point took third in competition during a camp in Lewistown when she was a freshman.

Especially during the summer, she works at Wolf Point Mercantile.

“It’s like a family when you work there,” she said.

In the classroom, her favorite subjects are art and child development. Art projects have included painting a gray scale of her favorite cartoon figures.

Her favorite teacher is Melissa Cromwell. “She’s always been there for me,” Brown said.

After graduating high school, Brown is planning to take a “gap” year. She will then attend cosmetology school in Williston, N.D.
