Native American Week at Poplar schools included empowerment workshops featuring education consultant Kansas Middletent for three days last week.

Middletent is a professional and inspirational speaker who focuses on supporting disadvantage youth and people.

“My main goal is to empower and inspire them to be the best versions of themselves,” Middletent said.

During the week, he urged students of all ages to become “rising stars” in whichever direction they wish to head.

He held separate programs for elementary students, middle school students and high school students. His presentations with elementary children were more activities based in order to keep their attention. When he spoke to the older students, subjects included goal setting and envisioning what they want to become in order to be their best person.

“I want for them to be proud of their culture and also be proud of themselves as individuals,” Middletent explained.

He urges the students to make their career choices based on their feelings and not what others tell them they should be doing. They need to identify their own goals.

Middletent said he provides a positive message. He doesn’t believe in “strengths and weaknesses” but rather “strengths and improvements.” For Native American Week, the school also provided a horsemanship clinic conducted by Clarice Smoker of Dakota Blue LLC. The clinic was well received by elementary students as some were introduced to horses for the first time.
