Culbertson Aims To Move Up In District Volleyball Standings

Culbertson’s volleyball team begins the season with 14 players including four returning starters.
The Cowgirls’ returning starters include senior Ayden Ator, senior Mariana Burciaga, senior Leandra Perkins and junior middle blocker Emma Berwick.
Other girls with some varsity experience are Catherine Donaldson, Josie Simonsen, Payton Labatte and Bella Petersen.
“We want to be defensively sound,” Coach Tiffany Nielsen said. “We are always stronger working together. We’re working on building each other.”
The team’s seniors are Perkins, Simonsen, Donaldson, Isabella Apple, Jacklynne McDonald, Burciaga and Ator.
Height is not a strength for the Cowgirls. Berwick is the team’s tallest player at 6-0.
“They play with a lot of hustle and heart,” Nielsen said. “They really put in the time this summer. They are really a good group of girls.”
Nielson, who is assisted by Tessa Rumsey, said some of the girls haver increased their power. She looks to have strong servers this season.
The Cowgirls will open their season by hosting the Culbertson Invitation on Saturday, Aug. 30.
“It’s a good kickoff to get things going,” Nielsen said of the tournament.
The coach is pleased that the Eastern C is now split into three districts, and that Culbertson will host the District 2C tournament.
