Monday, May 12, gave us 88 degrees. The seeding is progressing and grass definitely needs a rain. It was International Nurses’ Day placed on Florence Nightingale’s birthday May 12. We’d like to honor the nurses in our community, Susan Fast and Jamie Ortmann who serve faithfully when called upon.
On May 6, the faculty of the LCHS honored their students at Awards Night. They gave academic and athletic awards and recognized Lucas Lorenz, Sarah Brown, Mindy Olfert and Pastor Wayne Hathaway with community spirit awards.
Academic-All State awards were given in girls’ volleyball (Kencia Brown, Justice Byers, Lauren Fast, Jaden Gibson, Holly Hilkemann, Lauryn Holzrighter, Sidney Klatt, Abby Olfert, Rachel Pew), girls’ basketball (same as volleyball, minus Rachel Pew and Jaden Gibson, plus Hannah Brown and Monica Uy), and boys’ basketball (Wheeler Damboise, Nathan Fast, Mason Hilkemann, Diek Olfert, Hadden Olfert, Andy Ponce-Curl and Cam Reddig). Academic All-State for track has yet to be determined. Band lettered 21 students and choir 20.
On Thursday, May 8, the students presented their spring concert at Lustre Grade School. The band, supervised by Edmond Malihan, began with the national anthem, done very well. Greetings were brought by Jeanne Matthyser, and the band performed Galactic Episode and When the Saints Go Marching In.
The kindergarten through grade two (all fellows), choreographed Men in Black.

Grades 5-6 did two pieces:
Don’t Worry Be Happy and Grades 7-8 presented a skit called Judge Rudy. After a break, Mr. Prince directed a finale called I Like to Move It from Madagascar with all the LGS students. The band had 18 of the 40 LGS students.
Faraway guests included Pastor Lenihan and Debbie’s daughter, Amanda and son, Ivor of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Matthyser’s mother from South Africa.
