Spelling Bee

Aurora Big Horn, a seventh-grade student, came away as the champion of the Wolf Point school’s spelling bee held on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The bee featured 26 students in grades fourth through eighth. The students qualified during class competitions.

Big Horn and Caydee Gorder, a sixth-grade student, were the only two contestants remaining for several rounds of the competition on Thursday. After Big Horn spelled Olympics correctly, Gorder misspelled the word upholstery. Big Horn then spelled detainees to earn the first-place title.

Alena Bradshaw, an eighth-grader, and Kellen Moore, a seventh-grader, went out during the same round. Bradshaw then won a tie-breaker to take third while Moore placed fourth.

Bella Peters, a sixth-grade student, and Zhaiden St. Germaine, a seventh-grade student, tied for fifth place.

Kevin Belgrade placed seventh and will serve as an alternate for the county bee.

The top six placers qualified for the Roosevelt County spelling bee. The competition is scheduled for Feb. 27 starting at 1 p.m. in Froid.

Other contestants in Wolf Point were Joshua Bauer, Brooklyn Bearcub, Jenny Brown, Adaliyah Budak, Rylan Campbell, Enzo Castro- Stretches, Cali Gorder, Lakota Grey Bull, Skye Fast Horse, Damien Finley, Caleb Iron Cloud, Audri Kent, Jacoby Lilley, Amya Low Dog, Wyatt Mee, Hope Pipestem, Freya Red Elk, Sundance Standing Rock and River Tapaha.
