Wolves Fall In Conference Contest Against Malta


Although it was extremely cold outside on Saturday, Jan. 18, the Malta Mustangs were red hot during the first quarter in their conference game against Wolf Point.
Malta ran to a 34-14 lead in the first half on the way to a 91-51 win over the Wolves.
After a three-pointer by Jett Azure kept the Wolves close early at 9-5, the visiting Mustangs struck for the next 11 points including three-pointers by Dawson Hammond and Bohdi Brenden.
Malta kept rolling with a three-point play by Stockton Oxarart along with a three-pointer by Brenden and ended the quarter with a 34-14 lead.
The Wolves played much better in the second quarter as the inside scoring of Zandon Calder and another three-pointer by Azure highlighted play. Wolf Point accounted for six of the last seven points of the second quarter on baskets by Calder off assists from Richard Campbell and Roper Flaten along with a tip-in by Campbell. Malta led 46-27 at intermission.
The Mustangs increased their lead to 61-37 during the third quarter, but consecutive three-pointers by Campbell and Rebel Mays excited Wolf Point’s fans. Malta scored the next eight points and held a 68-45 advantage at the end of the period.
Wolf Point’s top scorers were Calder with 20 and Mays with 10 points. Also scoring were Azure with six, Campbell with five, Flaten with four, Sean Hamilton with four and Cole Holen with two.
Leading Malta were Brenden with 30 and Hammond with 21 points.
The Wolves will host Circle on Thursday, Jan. 23, and Fairview on Friday, Jan. 24.
