The Poplar wrestling team is enjoying an excellent turnout of 25 athletes this season.

The turnout includes eight girls, compared to only three girls last year.

Leading Poplar’s program are returning state placers Angelina Escarcega and Navarjo Escarcega. Both seniors placed second at last year’s state meet. Angelina is a two-time state champion.

Other wrestlers returning for the Indians include Mickey Failing, Alara Cooper, Blake Follette and Rollen Spotted Bull.

The squad features three eighth-graders with two boys and a girl.

“Pretty much all of our wrestlers have some wrestling experience even if it was in junior high,” Poplar Coach Jason Frederick said.

The coach expects the Indians to continue to get better throughout the campaign.

“The boys are young,” Frederick said. “We’re looking to improve.”

The Indians will open their season at the Eagle Invitational in Sidney on Dec. 6-7.

Poplar will compete at the state tournament in Billings on Feb. 13-15.

“With the girls numbers, our goal will be to bring home a team trophy from divisional and, hopefully, from state,” Frederick said.
