Gavin Deen is used to stepping up when needed. The Culbertson High School senior often has been counted on to make a key tackle or a big play during the Cowboys’ football season.
Now, Deen has accepted another challenge. Deen, who turns 18 years old in November, has recently become a member of the Culbertson Volunteer Fire Department.
“It’s always something I’ve been interested in,” Deen said of becoming a firefighter.
He adds that he admires the current firefighters who put others in front of their own needs.
Deen will go through training during the next month. He says that being a firefighter might be something that he wants to do for years to come.
On the football field, the senior leads the Cowboys in tackles.
“I do enjoy having that opportunity,” Deen said of being a defensive standout.
He is a three-sport athlete for Culbertson. His favorite sport is football.
“It’s a real good team sport,” he explained.
He has played basketball for three seasons. “I like the atmosphere we have in the gym,” Deen said.
Highlights on the hardcourt have included qualifying for the divisional tournament last season.
Deen will participate in track and compete in throwing events for the first time this spring. “I had some friends tell me that it’s a lot of fun,” he explained. Other hobbies include hunting and fishing.
His favorite class is history with his favorite teacher, Dave Solem. “He’s a good teacher who makes it fun,” Deen said.
After high school, Deen might play collegiate football. His career path might head toward wildlife management or forestry.
He has attended school in Culbertson since the first grade.
“It’s a really good community that helps each other and has each others’ backs,” Deen said.
