Poplar School Officials Discuss Improvements
Poplar School Board discussed during a meeting on July 27, that the Poplar School District 5/6 is under a “rigorous action” designation by the Montana Office of Public Instruction.
Criteria to exit the designation includes improving graduation rate, meeting academic growth goals set in a school’s Integrated Strategic Action Plan and showing continual improvements in all of the components within the comprehensive needs assessment.
Requirements for the school district will include monthly reports, scheduled data talks three times a year with a regional lead professional development plan, a walk through with improvement specialists and attending monthly regional summits.
New superintendent of schools Keith Erickson outlined his goals for the upcoming year during the board’s monthly meeting in July.
Erickson told trustees, “Every year I set goals for myself and the district no matter what position I have held. I believe that goals need to be realistic and attainable. The goals also need to be organic and the living document that we used to keep us on track as a district.”
Erickson’s list of goals included: * Improving student achievement: Making certain that the school district is using its data collections/ assessments to make sure that each student is showing growth according to potential.
* Creating and fostering a safe and orderly environment. Everybody needs to do their part in making sure that the environment is conducive to learning each and every day. Administrators need to be visible and be available.
* Have more collaboration through the building leadership teams and district leadership team.
* Improve communications with parents and the community.
* Any and all discussions on resources need to be student first. Financial, policy and so forth all need to put students first.
