Editorial Embrace Knowledge That Schools Provide
My grandfather had to quit school when he was in the eighth grade. He and his family moved to the United States from The Netherlands when he was a child. His parents then needed him to leave the school life behind in order to help the family make ends meet.
Even though he went on to have a family, home and was able to provide for his children, he said he always felt “cheated” that he couldn’t continue with his education.
His quest for knowledge never ended. As a youngster, I was inspired when my grandfather earned his GED after he retired. The local newspaper even did a story about his dedication to his life-long learning.
The 2024-2025 school year begins soon in our area. Some families are more dedicated than other households about their children’s education. People need to remember that if a child is to succeed in the classroom, it’s vital for them to be in attendance. Every day is important.
Regardless of your race or your family’s background, it’s your right to have a quality education. The Montana Constitution even reads, “It is the goal of the people to establish a system of education which will develop the full educational potential of each person. Equality of educational opportunity is guaranteed to each person of the state.”
The Montana Constitution further states, “The state recognizes the distinct and unique cultural heritage of the American Indians and is committed in its educational goals to the preservation of their cultural integrity.”
Take advantage of the rights that you have!
I think about a comment and lesson from one of my favorite all-time television shows. Miss Landers, the teacher on “Leave It To Beaver,” finds out that the title character intentionally missed a day of school. She explained that when you miss school, you are cheating yourself of a chance to learn. You have only so much time in school, and there’s so much to learn in this world.
Parents and children should make a commitment this school year to not miss those precious chances to learn. Make sure your child attends school whenever possible. A great staff of teachers are prepared to share their knowledge that won’t only benefit students today but for years to come.
