As part of its Native American studies instruction, Frontier School held a buffalo feed on Monday, Feb. 19. The feed, featuring a boiled stew with buffalo meatballs, came after a buffalo hunt was conducted during November.

Teacher Tina Strauser explained that an European mount was done on the buffalo’s skull and the skull was placed in the school’s display case. The hide will be tanned and returned to the school. After the feed, each family received a pound or two of buffalo meat.

Strauser said students in grades 5-8 each take a semester of Native American studies at Frontier School. Sixth- and seventh-grade students received instruction during the first semester, and fifthand eighth-grade students are being taught this semester.

Information covered include culture and tradition of the American buffalo.

Strauser said the class also featured Fort Peck Community College introducing local medicines and teaching languages.

“They’ve learned a lot through this,” Strauser said.

Recently, students thanked the tribal executive board in person for its support. Students also toured the tribal building.

The program during the feed included a flag song and victory song performed by the Poplar River Boys and a video presentation for audience members to view.
