Schmidt Announces Resignation In Poplar Schmidt Announces Resignation In Poplar

The Poplar School District will be searching for a new superintendent of schools. Dan Schmidt has announced his resignation from the position effective at the end of the school year. He has served as Poplar’s superintendent for the last six years.

“I’m ready for a change,” Schmidt said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time in Poplar.”

He explained that he is hoping to find a position in Colorado, closer to family members.

Schmidt said he informed the Poplar School Board of his decision this early so officials have a good amount of time to find a potential replacement. He said there’s about 17 open superintendent positions in the state and that the pool of candidates in Montana is small.

“I wanted to make sure that the board has its best chance to find candidates,” Schmidt said.

He is pleased with his six years in Poplar. He’s glad that some building improvements, including air conditioning in the high school and a new playground, have been made.

Other highlights have included increases with technology, improvements with safety/security and implementing a social/emotional platform. “It’s been a good six years,” Schmidt said.

During his free time, area residents have grown accustomed to seeing Schmidt officiate football games.

“It’s always been a good outlet for me,” Schmidt said of officiating. “I believe in helping all the kids in the area when you get the opportunity to do so.”
