Ice, Fog To Ease As Temps Rise
Following last week’s record-setting cold, the region has been experiencing hazardous road conditions, including a layer of ice under recent snowfall, as well as freezing fog and hoarfrost limiting visibility. Mail delivery along U.S. Highway 2 was delayed on Jan. 22.
National Weather Service Glasgow meteorologist Ruth Ebert reported that conditions have been more severe on the west side of our coverage area near Glasgow, with underlying ice and fog thinning out as you travel east toward Culbertson and the North Dakota border.
Snow accumulations of 2.9 inches were recorded in Glasgow Jan. 16-18. Freezing rain hit the area Sunday and ground air temps have remained cold, said Ebert, allowing slick road conditions and limited visibility to persist as cold air sticks closer to the ground. Ebert said conditions should improve starting Wednesday, alleviating visibility issues and slick road surfaces.
“By Wednesday, we are expecting a disturbance of the atmosphere to allow ground temps and temps at lower elevations to come up,” Ebert said.
Moving into the weekend, Ebert says temps should reach the upper 30s and are expected to climb into the 40s by Monday. Similar conditions are expected to persist through the end of the month and into February. “The warmer air should continue for a while at least,” said Ebert.
