Wolf Point Wrestlers To Open Season At Sidney Meet
Wolf Point’s wrestlers will open their season at the Eagle Invitational in Sidney on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2.
Wolf Point coach Scott Vandall said the meet will feature 27 teams from all classes. Squads will include wrestlers from Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and Washington state.
Vandall is optimistic with a turnout of 13 wrestlers for the upcoming season.
“We have some returners, some new ones and some have come back,” Vandall said as the Wolves started practices on Thursday, Nov. 16.
The girls’ team is led by Joli Beston, who has placed twice at the state meet. The senior earned sixth place at last season’s state competition.
Also returning for the girls’ squad is freshman Jeina Reum, who enjoyed a solid season as an eighth-grader at the varsity level. She came two matches away from placing at state last season.
Freshmen Kailayla Villaluz and Lakealah Mays are also expected to be good wrestlers for Wolf Point’s girls.
“We’re excited for the year,” Vandall said. “We have a good group of kids.”
Leading the group for Wolf Point’s boys are Kasey Reed and Jesse Reed. Both of them qualified for the state meet last year and Jesse advanced into the second day of competition.
JonJon Williams is looking to build from last season’s performances.
Newcomers include Camden Doornek, who is a transfer student from Billings West High School. He was a freshman wrestler at Billings West.
Michael Bell, a junior, is wrestling after being in the basketball program the last two seasons.
“He’s an athlete,” Vandall said. The coach is also expecting good things from Reilly Rees and Wyatt Martin. Tavian Bell and Jimmy Jackson are also promising newcomers.
Assistant coaches are Maestro Martinez, Dave Hopson, Josh Toews, Caleb Pennington and Dana Matejovsky.
“We have a lot of experience in the wrestling room,” Vandall said.
The Wolves will host the divisional meet on Feb. 2-3.
