Culbertson’s girls’ basketball has a new look entering this season.

After losing four starters to graduation, the Cowgirls are shooting for a quick rebuilding project this year under new head coach Sabrina Labatte.

“We have great attitudes and a good commitment,” Labatte said.

She has served as an assistant high school coach for five years and also coached at the junior high level for two years. She said she coached many of the current varsity girls in junior high.

Destiny Thompson is Culbertson’s lone returning starter. Thompson earned All-Conference honors in District 2C last season.

Thompson is the only senior on Culbertson’s 13-player roster. There aren’t any juniors on the squad.

“We’re young,” Labatte said. Ayden Ator, a sophomore, was Culbertson’s first player off the bench last season.

Sophomores Ivy Colvin, Mariana Burciaga and Leandra Perkins also have some varsity experience.

“We have a good turnout as far as numbers,” Labatte said. “They’re young and fierce.”

A team strength could be the girls’ quickness so the Cowgirls might press quite a bit.

“Hopefully, that’s my goal,” Labatte said about fullcourt pressure. “We will need to get in shape.”

She feels the pre-season favorites in District 2C are Plentywood and Bainville.

“I’m hoping to be in the top five,” the coach said.
