Culbertson Boys’ Squad Aims To Improve Throughout Season
With five returning letterwinners, the Culbertson Cowboys are looking forward to a successful boys’ basketball season.
Back for the Cowboys are Nyreece Halvorson, Donte Eagle Boy, Bridger Salvevold, Dawson Bergum and Mark Kirkaldie.
Seniors on the squad are Eagle Boy, Halvorson and Carson Solem.
New to the program is head coach Milt Apple. His coaching experience includes being head coach for Brockton.
Apple is pleased with the turnout of 20 players for the first practices. It’s a junior dominated team. The Cowboys have four freshmen.
“It’s pretty good numbers,” the coach said. Apple has been kept busy as he has also been coaching the junior high boys. He said a plus is that players are receiving the same message.
“I’m used to it, but I’m starting to feel my age a little bit,” Apple laughed about coaching both teams.
He feels Culbertson will feature one of the quickest squads in District 2C.
“And we have some size,” Apple said. “We have athletes, it’s whether we can put it together.”
The Cowboys will open their season against a talented Class B squad when they travel to Poplar on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
“That will give us a good idea of where we stand,” Apple said of playing the Indians.
He sees Plentywood as the pre-season favorite to win the District 2C title. The top four teams from the league will advance to the divisional tournament.
Apple says one of his goals for the Cowboys is for them to qualify for the divisional tourney.
“I think we should be a divisional team. We should be able to, if we put it together,” Apple said.
