Red Bottom Celebration Committee Shows Appreciation To Veterans Red Bottom Celebration Committee Shows Appreciation To Veterans

The Red Bottom Celebration committee believes in honoring veterans and to show its appreciation served full breakfasts to area veterans on Saturday, Nov. 11, in recognition of Veterans Day.

Larry Wetsit, cultural advisor for the committee, said, “We have always honored veterans for the service that they’ve done. We look at our Indian people in other countries, and we’re fortunate that the Creator brought us here. We’re treated a lot better than other indigenous people. We say it’s because our people defended their country.”

Wetsit said that Native Americans have served the country started well since the Civil War. He added that warriors have always been held in high regard by Native Americans.

“Our families sent our young men to serve,” Wetsit said. “As a result, we’ve all benefited from it.”

The breakfast included pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, potatoes, fruit and muffins.

“We can at least feed them,” Wetsit said of veterans. “The Indian way is, if they like you, they feed you. It’s a big meal. We want them to be full when they leave here.”

The breakfast took place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wolf Point Community Hall. Mason Runs Through Jr. said all the workers were volunteers for the breakfast. He added there’s no head cook, but most feel Ron Jackson is the best cook.

Runs Through is the committee’s flag bearer. His parents, Mason Sr. and Irene, were long-time Red Bottom Celebration committee members.

Although the Frazer native now lives in Watford City, N.D., he makes sure to come back to the area for all events.

They noted that attendees on Saturday morning included Promise Crawford, who was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant major in the U.S. Army.

“We’re honored because of her accomplishments,” Wetsit said. “She’s a good role model for younger people.”
