Famed conductor Charles Bruffy inspired high school singers during his time in Wolf Point school classes last week.

Bruffy is a three-time Grammy Award winner. He is one of the most admired choral conductors in the United States. Bruffy began his career as a tenor soloist, performing with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in recordings and in concerts in France and at Carnegie Hall.

“We’re having fun,” the outgoing conductor said between classes on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

He noted he used to visit more schools until COVID cut down the possibility of such arrangements. He met Wolf Point students when they attended a symphony performance in Kansas City, Mo., last spring. He remembers hearing that a group of students from Wolf Point was in the audience.

“So, I went out and talked with them,” Bruffy said.

The visit led to discussions of Bruffy providing guest instruction in Wolf Point. This was his first time in the Treasure State.

“What is impressive is their willingness to come along with me,” Bruffy said of how interested the Wolf Point students were in his direction.

He enjoyed the experience of interacting with the local students.

“I want to share with them some other ideas about making music,” Bruffy said.

He noted he also stressed the importance of commitment, artistry and attention.

Wolf Point music instructor Russell Johnson was thankful that Bruffy shared his knowledge. Students from Poplar, Plentywood and Scobey came to Wolf Point on Friday, Sept. 22, for instruction from Bruffy.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for them,” Johnson said of the students. “I’m happy other schools had the time to work with him as well.”
