Bigger Sky Kids To Create Murals

In projects designed to enhance our community, artists Chelysa Owens-Cyr and Cathryn McIntyre will lead Bigger Sky Kids in creating murals on two Wolf Point businesses. Both are made possible by grants from the Western Bank of Wolf Point Legacy Endowment Fund at the Montana Community Foundation, as well as financial support from the building owners.

Wolf Point artist Owens- Cyr has received national acclaim for her ledger art. Her Unity design was chosen by Pendleton for its 2021 tribal college blanket. In 2022, another ledger artwork won the Creative Native Grand National Prize from the Center for Native American Youth. She will design and direct work on a mural at Zen Medicine on Main Street in Wolf Point.

Cathryn McIntyre was contacted by Al Pipe, owner of Medicine Creek Caregivers on First Avenue North, after he saw murals she had completed in Glasgow, her hometown. She immediately approached staff at Bigger Sky Kids about including students from her studio art class.

The mural will incorporate original depictions of Montana wildflowers, created by those young artists. They have begun working out their designs in watercolor while learning more about our native plants.

McIntyre joined Bigger Sky Kids in fall 2018 on an Artist- in-Community grant from the Montana Arts Council. She has continued in that role ever since, currently on a grant from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation. She directed work on the monumental mural in the Glasgow underpass that was completed in summer 2022.

B!SK’s board and staff believe these murals will encourage our young citizens to volunteer in projects that benefit their community. We appreciate the extraordinary advocacy from Endowment Fund officers Duane Kurokawa and R. J. Doornek for their support of both our youth and our community.

Bigger Sky Kids welcomes Wolf Point children from grades four through eight. To learn more, visit them at biggerskykids. org.
