Poplar’s Boys Shoot To Contend This Basketball Season
After a strong showing in the post season last year, Poplar’s boys’ basketball squad looks to build on that success this season.
Returning starters for the Indians are junior Delray Lilley, junior Geordy Medicine Cloud and sophomore Kaniel Ricker. Lilley and Medicine Cloud were each voted to the All-Conference second team last year.
“We should be solid,” Poplar coach Gib Medicine Cloud said. “We kind of have the direction that we want to go in.”
Other returning varsity players for the Indians include 6-3 senior Preston Ogle, senior Allen Russell III, junior Quinn Sutherland and sophomore Walker Bushia.
“There’s a lot of speed and quickness,” coach Medicine Cloud said of the team.
The coach was very pleased that 1012 boys were extremely active in the squad’s summer program.
“Last year, we made some noise at the end. We’re looking to do more,” Medicine Cloud said. “I like the reps we got in the summer.”
He expects a strong District 2B conference this season. “The district is wide open as always,” Medicine Cloud said. “We have to stick to what we do.”
What Poplar does best is run a fastbreak offense and apply full-court defensive pressure.
“We will get up and down the floor,” Medicine Cloud noted. “You will probably see a lot of full-court pressure from us.”
The new 35-second shot clock could be beneficial for the Indians. During tournament time last year, the Indians averaged 13 seconds per possession.
“That’s what we want to do, get up and down,” Medicine Cloud said.
The Indians will open their season at the Lockwood Invitational with games against Roundup and Shepherd on Dec. 9-10.
