Nakoda Dakota Oyate Youth Council members hosted a Native Fashion with a Passion runway show Sept. 24 at Fort Peck Community College in Poplar featuring work by designers Jackie Bird, Rebekah Jarvey and youth artist Chelysa Owens-Cyr. The emcee was adult youth advisory board member Maria Vega.

“All the models were members of the NDO youth council,” said organizer Carrie Manning. “Entertainment was also NDO youth council. The photographer was NDO youth council and the make up artists were youth and one adult.”

Models included MJ Russell, Rita Track, Haly Eder, Jillian Derrly, Prairie Dawn Thunderchild, Royce Jarvey, Wambidi Yellowhammer, Kristen Miller, Maurice Big Horn, Antoine Manning and Josh Bushman.

“The event was intended to be all youth driven with my help to guide them along the way,” Manning said.

Designer Rebekah Jarvey told the Northern Plains Independent that she was inspired by Manning to help turn her idea into a reality.

“For me, the best part of the fashion show was to see Carrie’s vision come to life,” she said. “Back in April at Kyi-yo, we manifested the idea of a show in her community. She did an incredible job organizing her first fashion show.”
