Swank Variety Plot Tour Set For July 11
The 41st Swank Variety Plot Tour on Monday, July 11, will take place at the Swank farm north of Poplar. Introductions and county presentations will begin at 5 p.m. at the Swank family farm, with the tour starting at 5:15 pm at the test plots Dr. Chengci Chen from the MSU Eastern Agriculture Research Center in Sidney will lead the introduction to wheat plots and field research trials at the EARC and Swank Farms. At the test plots, Dr. Mike Giroux, Dr. Jason Cook and Dr. Venugopal Mendu, all of Montana State University, will discuss cereal grain breeding and grain quality of wheat varieties.
Following the variety tour, enjoy a steak supper in the farmyard at 6 p.m. Dinner is sponsored by Roosevelt County Extension, Fort Peck Extension, Culbertson Chamber of Commerce, the Swank Family and neighbors as well as local businesses including Opportunity Bank in Culbertson, Independence Bank of Poplar and C & B Operations LLC of Culbertson. Ice cream is once again provided by a gracious donation from Arne Sutton Insurance Agency.
During dinner, Klayton Lohr, the U.S. Durum Growers Association director, will give a USDGA crop outlook and market report. After dinner, Dr. Jared Beaver, MSU Wildlife Management specialist, will discuss vertebrate pest management and nuisance wildlife management by using ecology of land resources and emerging technologies as part of integrated pest management.
Everyone is invited to attend. The Swank Farm is located at 5106 Road 2041. From Highway 2 (mile marker 617), go north on Highway 251 (RY Trail) for 20.5 miles, then 3 miles west on Road 2041 or 20 miles west of Froid on Highway 344, 3 miles north on Road 1041, then 10 miles west on Road 2041.
