A pedestrian bridge is being built heading to American Legion Park in Poplar from tribal headquarters, according to Fort Peck Tribes Executive Board member Jestin Dupree.

“For those of you who are wondering what is being built at the bridge going to the pow-wow grounds in Poplar,” said Dupree in a recent social media post, “it is a pedestrian bridge. There have been incidents over the years to where people were being hit by cars while walking or on a bike and that was a safety concern for our tribe.”

Transportation planner Connie Thompson told the Northern Plains Independent

that the path was started last month. It is part of the larger airport redevelopment project which includes the roundabouts and wellness center projects.

According to Thompson, funding for the project came from the Federal Highway Administration. She added that additional funding sources are currently in process.

Thompson said the approximately 125-foot walking path portion includes an underpass and a connection to a bike path. It is expected to be completed in September of this year.
