Froid High School’s ninth and 10th grade art students recently completed a colorful and fun art unit on recycling.

Froid art teacher Maria Gallegos led the classes through a cup recycling project by first showing videos on how paper cups are made. Students learned that paper cups are a one-time-use item that most people use once and throw away; usually after less than 10 minutes of use.

Students also learned that paper cups can be recycled into corrugated cardboard, but most cups are simply tossed in the garbage and end up in landfills.

Froid High school students used a variety of colorful paper cups, many donated by local fast-food businesses, to create wearable art. Some students brought in paper cups from their own, recent fast-food purchases.

The paper cups had to be carefully de-constructed by the art students before being re-constructed and hand-sewn into colorful caps. Each cap is made from 16 individual cups. In total, students punched 1,220 holes in the cup pieces before stitching them together to create caps.
