Wrestlers Compete Against Tough Opponents

Wolf Point’s wrestlers competed in Miles City and Glasgow during the weekend.

In Miles City, Josh Bushman had two matches against wrestlers from Miles City. He went 1-1. “Josh had a pretty good night. He wrestled well,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “I was very happy with Josh’s matches. He is improving.”

Samantha Reed wrestled two Miles City wrestlers. She went 1-1. “Sam had a great match with a girl from Miles City. She went right after her,” Vandall said. “She took her down and put her right in her back. She got some near fall and then the fall came later. She really had a good night.”

Joli Beston went 0-2. She faced two Miles City wrestlers. She wrestled up a weight class against one girl. “She got after this girl she was ‘the bully’ this match. She had a great scramble going on and for an arm high and yeah that was it,” Vandall said. “She has really came out with a bully mentality her lately. Against boys and girls. That’s what we want to see. We were very happy.”

Xavier Kemp wrestled against wrestlers from Miles City and Columbus. He went 0-2. “Xavier has just been in a slump. We all go through it at some point and we will get through it,” Vandall said. “He is frustrated. It will all work out.”

Jordan Davis had a match with Miles City and Columbus wrestlers. He went 0-2. “Jordan wrestled up this whole week as he went to 205. Jordan went up due to weight ins. He was working hard to get to 170. He just couldn’t get there,” Vandall said. “So he chose to not have to do a three-way wrestle off at 182 cause we can only have two wrestlers in a weight class at divisional. He really took one for the team on that. He works hard and things will get better for him. We are very proud of him he chose the team over himself. It’s hard to do that sometimes.”

Chance Smith wrestled a Miles City wrestler and a Columbus wrestler. He went 1-1. “Chance has some skinniness about him he just surprises people and get the wins. I will take that,” Vandall said.

Charlie Page faced a Miles City wrestler and Columbus opponent. He went 0-2. “Charlie is a light heavy weight. He is 211-215. And lot of the time, he is outweighed by a lot. He is working on being more aggressive,” Vandall said. “He has good speed and foot work for a big kid. He is coming along.”

Mason Garfield faced Miles City and Columbus wrestlers. Garfield went 2-0. “I was happy with him. He just plain dominated these kids,” Vandall said. “Mason has made great strides since his freshman year.”

The Wolves competed in Glasgow on Friday, Feb. 5. “We had a pretty rough night as far as win-losses are concerned,” Vandall said. “The kids were a little guns shy. We had some really good matches. Things just didn’t work out well.”

Reed went 0-2. She wrested a girl from Baker and and a boy from Glasgow. “The Baker girl was tough. She is ranked fifth in the state,” Vandall said. “We wrestled her in baker. Sam held her own but was flat.”

Beston wrestled the Baker girl and a boy from Baker. She went 0-2. “Joli had the same girl from Baker that Sam did. Man, that was a barn burner there,” Vandall said. “Joli and the Baker girl were getting after it. There’s not a lot of love loss between the two of them. Joli had the girl on her back. We almost had the fall, but time ran out. That was by far the best I have see her wrestle. She used up a lot of energy and we got caught.”

Kemp faced a Glasgow wrestler and Malta wrestler. He went 0-2. “Xavier wrestled the Malta kid very well. We came up on the short end, but that was one of the best matches I seen him wrestle in a long time,” Vandall said.

Bushman faced wrestlers from Malta and Glasgow. “He lost both. He wrestled well.

Jordan Davis wrestled a couple tough kids one from Glasgow and one from Malta. “The Glasgow kid is going for his third title. Jordan was a little intimidated by him,” Vandall said.

Page wrestled a Malta wrestler and a Glasgow wrestler. “He had the state champion from last year. He was a little out gunned on that one,” Vandall said.

Mason Garfield faced a state champion from last year. “Mason wrestled him well, we were up in the match but lost a close scramble and that was it,” Vandall said.

The Wolves went back to Glasgow on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Reed and Beston had one match with each other. “Sam came out the winner on that one. I hate seeing that happen but sometimes mat time is mat time,” Vandall said.

Kemp had one match against a wrestler from Fort Benton. “He is a pretty tough kid, he lost the match,” Vandall said.

Jordan Davis faced two Glasgow wrestlers. He went 0-2. “ He got lucky again and got the two-time state champion again. Jordan didn’t back down he went out and did good,” Vandall said.

Page went 0-2. “He had the state champion again, he did better this time,” Vandall said.

Smith went 0-2. “He had the two-time state champion. He also had a different kid from Glasgow. This was one of his best matches on the year. He was getting after it. We were ahead and made a freshman mistake,” Vandall said. Garfield wrestled two Fort Benton wrestlers He went 2-0. “Mason got some sweet revenge on the one. He beat us in the quarterfinals at state last year,” Vandall said. “We got the fall in the first period. Mason really controlled both matches.”

The Wolves head to Poplar on Friday, Feb. 12.
