Indians Lose Contests To Sidney Squads

Poplar and Sidney battled in boys’ basketball action for 36 minutes on Thursday, Jan. 7, until the Eagles emerged with a 49-47 overtime win in Poplar.

A free throw by Poplar’s Inyan Growing Thunder tied the score, 43-43, with 19 seconds left in regulation. Sidney missed on its shot attempt at the buzzer to potentially win the non-conference contest.

Sidney started overtime on a strong note when Parker Sinks hit a 14-footer. Neither team scored again until Growing Thunder fired in a three-pointer to put the Indians up, 46-45, with 55 seconds remaining.

After a drive by Sidney’s Jerome Entz, a free throw by Wilfred Lambert produced a 47-47 deadlock with 34 seconds left. The Eagles scored the winning points on a pair of free throws by Max Peters with 4.7 seconds remaining. The Indians missed on a final three-point shot attempt.

Top scorers for the Indians were Lambert with 23 and Growing Thunder with 15 points. Rounding out the scoring were Preston Ogle with six and Elijah Grey Bear with three.

Poplar pulled even on five points by Lambert and a three-pointer by Grey Bear to open the fourth quarter. Deadlocked at 35-35, Sidney moved ahead with seven straight points by Sinks. Down 42-37 with 1:11 left, the Indians battled back on three points by Lambert and three points by Growning Thunder.

Poplar’s girls’ basketball team played a solid first half but lost in Sidney, 68-42, on Thursday, Jan. 7.

The Indians stayed close early as two drives by Keandra Martell and a free throw by Macey Dionne put them behind by only a 6-5 margin.

After Sidney took a 13-5 advantage, Poplar’s Gracelyn Medicine Cloud hit a a 15-footer. The Eagles led 14-7 at the end of the opening quarter.

The Indians put together a strong start in the second quarter as baskets by Jazmyn CarryWater and Dionne cut the margin to 16-11.

The Eagles accounted for the next six points, but Poplar fought back to 22-15 on two free throws by Dionne and a hoop by Rikki Belton.

Four straight points by sophomore Morgen Nordwick pulled the Indians to 23-19.

Later in the quarter, Medicine Cloud hit a three-pointer to keep the Indians close at 27-22.
