Optimists’ Mile Of Pennies Planned For June 7

The Optimist Club of Wolf Point has set a goal of making a mile of pennies leading up Sixth Avenue North. The attempt will be made Sunday, June 7. Event organizers Helen Welte and Gloria Sande say they will start laying the first coins along the route at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will go to the group’s childhood health and wellness fund.

According to the group’s promotional flyer, it should take 84,480 coins to stretch all the way to a mile, amounting to $844.80. The planned route will start at U.S. Highway 2 and run up Sixth Avenue to the municipal swimming pool on Listerud Street. In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled.

Welte and Sande are asking attendees to save and bring pennies to contribute to the effort. Participants are invited to tape down their own pennies or hand them off to volunteers.

For questions, contact Welte at 653-1653 or Sande at 650-0107.

Optimist International is a worldwide volunteer organization made up of more than 2,500 local clubs whose members work each day to make the future brighter by bringing out the best in children, in their communities and in themselves.
