He grew up in eastern Montana and graduated valedictorian  from Bainville High School. He went to college in Dillon, where he met and married Loreen Short. They had four children.<br \/>\n\t  He worked as a teacher, a principal, a superintendent  and an insurance agent. Later in his life, he married Yvonne Knox. He helped her run a flower shop and managed  their properties.
