Are you a Montanan who is 62 or older as of Dec. 31, 2022? If yes, you will be interested in a legislative change to the Elderly Homeowner/ Renter Tax credit for the tax year 2022. The new law doubled the income exclusion from $6,300 to $12,600 and increased the credit to $1,150.

Would you qualify for the 2022 Montana’s elderly homeowner/renter tax credit? If you can answer “yes” to all of the following questions, then you may be eligible: 1. Were you 62 or older as of Dec. 31, 2022?

2. Did you rent, own or lease a home in Montana for a total of 6 months or more during 2022?

3. Did you live in Montana for nine months or more during 2022?

4. Was your total gross household income less than $45,000 in 2022?

The amount of the tax credit is based on household income, rent, and property tax. You calculate the credit by using the Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit Schedule on Form 2, page 10 of the Montana Income Tax Return. Depending on the result of the calculations your credit could range from $0 to $1,150. Only one claim is allowed per household. If you do not need to file a Montana income tax return other than to claim the credit, you only need to complete certain parts of Form 2. Otherwise, the Department of Revenue will not be able to process your claim.

Use Form 2, page 10 to see if you are eligible for the credit and how much you may receive. Complete the Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit Schedule and the Long-Term Care Facility Rent Calculation Worksheet if applicable: https://mtrevenue.gov/ publications/montana-individual- income-tax-return- form-2/. Note: The 2022 form is not yet available as of this writing.
